FUN STUFF!
DJ UCH: HOW TO GROW OLD AND LOOK YOUNGER!
I've recently been getting A LOT of compliments and a question I keep hearing is, "How are you getting younger with age?" I even heard this twice over the weekend in two completely different social circles!
So I've decided to share some of my secrets and tell you all how I maintain my look. I wouldn't call these beauty secrets, they're just basically what I do and how I live. You probably won't agree with all of it, but I hope you can pick up a good habit or two and apply it to your life too!
DJ UCH & THE AGE DEFYING REGIMEN (sort of ;)
MOISTURIZE: I use lotion every day. Not sometimes or when I feel my skin is dry, I use it every day. I suggest you do too! For the record, if I didn't use lotion I would be VERY ashy ;), so I kinda have to. My favs are any of Vaseline's or St. Ives's products. Top of the food chain.
NO JUNK FOOD: I really, really LOVE potato chips, like L.O.V.E. But I also know that there's zero nutritional value in them, so I might eat them three or four times a year. Sux, but it's what's necessary. My rule on junk food is, "If I can't cook it, skip it." I'll eat leftovers before I go and buy candy. P.S., No fast food! I'm still trying to figure out how to cook chocolate so it will fit into my "cook it" credo :) but until then I'll have a Snickers every once or so often. Maybe once a month, except when I work in New Jersey. That's when I eat them like they're going out of business! Something in the water over there :)
SCRUB & CLEANSE: Truth be told, I have bad skin, and it's been that way since age 18. Fortunately, I once caught a late night repeat of Oprah (yes OPRAH! ;) that talked about exfoliating. I never heard of it before, but I was willing to try anything to get my skin in good shape regularly and not just when I was lucky. I did some research and took notes during the program, and since then I have been buying St. Ives Apricot Scrub and St. Ives Apricot Cleanser. The results have been great! My skin has cleared up immensely and the exfoliating gets rid of all the dead skin (in case you didn't know, we all have dead skin on our bodies and it's our jobs to get rid of it and make way for the new skin) giving my grill a fresh look ;) The scrub and cleanser cost me about $5 each and last me about a month. I use them twice a day, once in the shower during the day and once before sleeping. If you have bad acne, try mixing salicylic acid with the scrub.
EXERCISE: Eeeeek, yes I said the E word, and yes I know, I know....the gym SUX. Who wants to drag themselves to a sweaty place full of sweaty, marginally good-looking people that check you out while you stretch or run in place? Well here's my secret to the gym: I don't go! HAHA. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the gym is bad. Going to the gym for 45 minutes three to four times a week will do you A LOT of good and will give you a youthful look in the long run! For me though, I never seem to get around to joining the gym (excuse), and maybe it's because I'm so busy (excuse) or that I don't live very close to a gym (excuse). I'll join someday, but until then I do plenty of walking in NYC. I also notice that I tend to run up stairs instead of walk them. It started out as a way of getting the hell away from people when leaving the subway ;) but it's become a regular practice for me, to the point where I don't consciously do it. Do I run up stairs all the time? No, but I do run them about 80 % of the time, on average it's at least once a day.
WATER: Water is your friend! If you live in the U.S., you are fortunate enough to have proper filtration, so use it! Water has zero calories and it's good for you. I do drink orange juice frequently as well for my vitamin c, but I DO NOT drink soda. Yuck. Soda has zero nutritional value and whether it says diet or not, it's not good for you. If you must, drink a soda once a week or once a month, but remember that what you put in your body reflects on the outside, especially as your age increases. Water is the best hydrate!
DON'T WORRY!: I try not to worry about anything. I have concerns, but I don't worry. What's the difference? Well, to me, having a concern is understanding a problem, finding a solution, and putting the wheels in motion in order to solve that problem (that's very virgo of me ;). You know it can be fixed so there's no need to worry, but it is nevertheless a cause for concern. Worrying, to me, is preoccupying your brain with trouble that is out of your league or avoiding solutions to problems that are fixable. Like leaving the house with no umbrella and seeing that it might rain. What is worrying about it going to do? You can't make it not rain. You can, however, buy an umbrella (ella ella ella AY..sorry couldn't help it) and put it to good use. What if you can't buy an umbrella? Well then you'll get wet, but who cares?!? If your clothes get ruined, you can always buy new clothes and if your hair gets ruined then you can always get it redone another time. If you look like a wet noodle in pictures as a result, make the best of it by making funny faces. You'll have a great story years later about those pictures and you'll probably have a good laugh (which is also good for your skin ;). The point is DON'T WORRY, don't stress over things you can't control. Stress shows up in your face and the older we get, the more stress sets up shop for good rather than checking out like they did when we were younger.
SEX: Pheromones rule, they're Mother Nature's healthy day spa! ;). And for the record, a party of one doesn't count (haha ;), the human touch is amazing and needed for those pheromones! P.S., It also has to be GOOD, but I'm guessing you already knew that, and by the way, I'm not saying to SHAG the world either!
CIGARETTES AGE YOU: You might not care, and God bless you, but if you do then please wake up and smell the fresh air. Cigarettes age you in a big way, they're no good for your looks or your health, now or ever.
GOOD GENES: Both my parents can pass for 10 to 15 years younger than their actual age. I lucked out in the gene lotto.
DRINKING: I drink a lot and I love it ;) My preferences are beer, white wine, and Patron tequila. I stay away from mixed drinks, too much sugar. I used to drink whiskey neat but I decided to give my liver a break. Love your liver! ;)
BE HAPPY: It takes more muscles in your face to frown than smile. So give your face a break and smile more. I have ALL my teeth so I smile in every picture. If you have a problem, fix it so you can go back to being happy. Sometimes it takes impracticality to get there, but so be it. Surfing for a living won't get you a $10 million house, but if it truly makes you happy then move to Costa Rica, I heard the surf is awesome there. When you have your friends over in your 50's, they'll wonder how you manage to still look 35! P.S., they don't send AARP notices to Costa Rica either, at least none that I know of ;) Less Stress, Cowabunga!
So there are a few of my secrets to looking years my junior. I do what I like and love doing it, I thank my lucky stars a few times a day, I watch what I eat, then I eat it ;) no stogies and plenty of drinking with lots of laughter mixed in ;)
